COLCHESTER DARG ACTION PLAN 2005-2008

Introduction
Colchester Drug and Alcohol Reference Group (DARG) is the partnership responsible for delivering and co-ordinating the national drug and alcohol strategies at local level. This is their action plan for 2005-2008. It sets out a range of policies and interventions that aim to prevent, tackle or treat substance misuse problems in Colchester.

The Plan covers one of the four key priority areas of the Colchester Crime and Disorder Partnership’s (CDRP) 2005-2008 strategy: to reduce the harm caused by illegal drugs and alcohol misuse (Key Priority 3), and is one of the four action plans linked to that strategy. In addition, the DARG Action Plan includes treatment services that aim to improve the health and quality of life of all residents with drug or alcohol problems, regardless of the likelihood of them being involved in criminal or anti-social behaviour.

The Action Plan is set out in four sections covering the aims of the national strategies and consistent with the strategies of both Essex Drug and Alcohol Action Team (DAAT) and the Colchester CDRP. The sections and aims are:

Young People:To reduce drug and alcohol use amongst young people.

Community: To target drug misusing offenders via the Criminal Justice System and engage them in treatment To manage the impact of drugs and alcohol on specific community settings and specific groups

Availability: reducing the prevalence of drugs on our streets through effective policing and other measures to prevent drug dealing.

Treatment: providing a range of treatment and support services and working to reduce the health risks associated with misusing drugs and alcohol.
